Oh for those who missed it, here's the lesson for the week titled Worshipping God or worshipping Idols. 2 weeks ago i think. yup. do ponder on the questions. it's a little wordy i know. sorry about that.
as the book says, “an idol doesn’t have to be a small ceramic statue. It can be television, instant messaging, a boyfriend or girlfriend, …, money, friends, … basically anything that you love more than God.”
Most Christians worship an idol at some time or another during their spiritual journey with God, but real progress in that journey can only be made if you choose to evaluate your lifestyle and the way you spend your time and $, evaluate your priorities and surrender your idols to God, choosing to focus and give your time and effort to Him.
1) What are some of the things that can be considered idols in your life?
2) Why do you think such things are idols in your life?
Bible passage 1: Jeremiah 2:11-13
11 Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols.
12 Be appalled at this, O heavens, and shudder with great horror," declares the LORD.
13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
3) How is worshipping an idol like digging your own cistern?
4) Why do you think the heavens should ‘shudder with great horror’ when God’s people forsake Him for idols?
5) Have you ever had an idol but eventually removed it from your life? Share your experience if you have.
Bible passage 2 (Isaiah 55:1-3)
1 "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.
2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
3 Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live…
Spend some time this week, and this month, and this year, and the rest of your life seeking God, removing idols from your life with His strength.
And there's a loyalty that's deeper than mere sentiments
And a music higher than the songs that I can sing
Stuff of Earth competes for the allegianceI owe only to the Giver of all good things
So if I stand let me stand on the promise that you will pull me through
And if I can't, let me fall on the grace that first brought me to you
So if I sing let me sing for the joy that has born in me these songs
And if I weep let it be as a man who is longing for his home
